Chevrolet FNR-X Concept: Review

Chevrolet showed its cool-looking new concept model at the last Shanghai Auto Show. Chevy’s new creation called the Chevrolet FNR-X Concept is brand’s second concept car designed under the slogan “Find New Roads. The original FNR concept was shown to the audience at the same Show two year ago but in the form of the sports car. However, the follow-up of this futuristic car has the shape of the crossover and the plug-in hybrid powertrain. The styling is very expressive like it is the case with all concept cars but this model looks much closer to the production ready form than the first FNR sports concept car. The model also bears some resemblance with Toyota’s quirky styled CHR and has the interesting interior.

Chevrolet FNR-X Concept: Design

The responsibility for designing the Chevrolet FNR-X Concept car, GM entrusted to the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center with the base in Shanghai. The result is aggressively styled crossover which seems to follow the successful design formula of the Toyota CH-R but in Chevy’s signature way.

The proportions of the FNR-X are very close to the CH-R and more similarities can be seen on model’s roofline, side sculpting, rear pillar orientation, low-door trim, wheel arches, etc. However, to that formula, Chevy added its design touch. The front end can be described as the more sculpted version of Camaro ZL1. The hood has some similarities with the Corvette and mean-looking dynamic digital LED headlights brackets thin upper grille.

The muscular lines extend from model’s front over side panels and combined with oversized wheels and lower-door trim forming almost dramatic look. The A and B pillars are painted in the black and come in the combination with the sharply raked rear pillar and full-width rear glass. The concept model also has suicide-design rear doors and quad-element exhaust setup. The angular taillights and rear spoiler also add to its dramatic look.

Inside the cabin, Chevy uses as it calls high-tech fabric upholstery. The steering wheel and dash feature sporty design. The concept car also includes hexagonally shaped center stack and instrument cluster with large OLED displays. The rear split-folding seats can be easily reconfigured to increase the cargo space.

The model also employs the Advanced Driver Assist System which uses acoustic and optical sensors combined with the navigation system to provide enhanced driver assistance. There is also the large head up display which provides a 270-degree projection.

Chevy said only a few words about the powertrain of the Chevrolet FNR-X Concept. Essentially, it is the plug-in hybrid vehicle. It has the ability to switch between traditional or electric propulsion or combination of both worlds.

For the better functionality, the concept car can also change between the Versatility and Sport modes. Depending on the option, the adjustable suspension provides additional ground clearance or car sits lower for the sportier drive. The system also affects the aerodynamics depending on the position of the front and rear spoilers.
