Audi presented its new concept model Audi Q8 at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. The new model demonstrates brand’s strengths in technology, design and performance. It features versatility and comfort of typical SUVs but looks sportier and more elegant thanks to coupe-like lines. The Audi Q8 Concept is also highly dynamic and efficient thanks to the advanced powertrain.
Why is it important?
The new concept model presents the most significant evolution of brand’s design philosophy in years. It also brings the next-generation of infotainment technology and controls. What is also important, this model will get the production version which will come on the market as the 2018 model and will stand against BMW’s X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe.
Audi Q8 Concept: Design, Specs
The Audi Q8 Concept comes with the styling that redefines brand’s design philosophy. It looks more elegant and sportier than classic SUVs. The model features sleek body lines and rakish, coupe-like profile which add more dynamism to its presence.
The new wider and deeper grille design complemented with slender headlights also give the new identity to modern Audi. The new single-frame grille design features new shape and it includes horizontal slats and more vertical elements. Audi also adds some design elements that get inspiration from the Audi Ur-Quattro from the 80’s. It includes wide and flat C-pillars and strongly flared fenders. There is also horizontally-oriented rear side design with full-length taillights.
As for the dimensions, the Concept model is similar in size to the latest Q7. The model has 16.5 feet in length and wheelbase of 9.8 ft. Its wheelbase is actually just 0.3 inches shorter than on the Q7 while it has 1.6 inches less in the length. With 67.2-inch height, it is 1.3-inches lower than Audi’s three-row SUV but with its pumped shoulders, the Q8 Concept has 2.9-inches more in width.
Inside, the new concept model brings the new generation of Audi’s technologies. It includes large touch screens that replace physical controls with virtual ones. The expanded version of brand’s virtual cockpit is also present as well as the head-up display which projects the picture onto the windshield.
As the Audi says, Q8 Concept also provides ample rear legroom and seat comfort. The rear headroom is also generous despite its coupe-like roofline.
Audi Q8 Concept: Powertrain
Powering the Audi Q8 Concept is a plug-in hybrid system capable of producing the total power of 442 hp and torque of 516 lb-ft. The 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine provides 333 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque. There is also 134-hp electric motor working as the part of the 8-speed automatic transmission. The powertrain also includes the lithium-ion battery pack which should provide 37 miles of electric driving range.
The new Concept model has capability of reaching 62 mph in 5.4 seconds while the maximum speed is 155 mph.
Audi Q8 Concept: Production version, Release
The Audi Q8 Concept previews the production version which should go on sale as the 2018 Audi Q8. The production model should offer the range of V-6 and V-8 engines plus e-tron model. Outside the US, the range of diesel engines will also be available. The RS Q8 with the twin-turbo V-8 and more than 500 hp is also expected. The 2018 Q8 should cost approximately $5k to $10k more than the Q7.
