Mercedes is making final touches on the next-generation, full-size GLS SUV ahead of the debut at the 2019 New York Auto Show. The new, large, three-row Mercedes SUV is the replacement for the second-generation model which arrived for 2013 as the GL-Class but was renamed to GLS after the 2017 facelift. The third-generation GLS will face with the high-value, full-size models like the BMW X7, Audi Q8, Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, etc.
At the eve of the debut, the redesigned 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS was spotted nearly naked revealing curvier body combined with brand’s new styling elements. The interior of the model should also get the brand’s modern treatment and newest tech features. The powertrain range will include inline-6 units and more potent V-8 accompanied with the mild-hybrid technology. Buyers should also count on the AMG-branded version and the GLS73 with the plug-in hybrid setup could also get a chance.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS: Design
Mercedes will base the third-generation 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS on the new MHA platform used in brand’s SUV range for models sized form the GLC. This is closely-related underpinning to the MRA unit which makes the base of most Mercedes-badged coupes and sedans.
Based on the new platform, the redesigned GLS will also show less boxy body which gets curvier shape combined with a more rakish profile. The model adopts also the brand’s’ new face with the elements seen on the newest GLE.
Inside the cabin, the redesigned Mercedes GLS will use premium materials and finish combined with the latest tech features.
The model will get Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment system which includes two 12.3-inch screens. One will be used for the digital instrument cluster in front of the driver and second for sat-nav. There will also be a Burmester audio system and Wi-Fi hotspot. The large SUV will also provide different trim options with unique material and high-comfort features.
The new GLS will also rely on the latest safety technologies. Among the safety systems should be the unit which uses the map and sensors to slow or stop the car at upcoming corners and stops.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS: Powertrains
Mercedes hasn’t yet revealed the specs of the powertrain units for the all-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS.
The model should, however, use a 3.0-liter inline-6 and 4.0-liter V-8 units combined with the mild-hybrid technology. The plug-in hybrid version will also use the inline-6 engine and diesel version will appear in markets ousted the US.
The third-generation GLS should also appear in the AMG form with the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 under the hood and over 600 hp at disposal. The GLS73 version could also be in perspective with the V-8 plug-in hybrid system and output potentially reaching 800hp.
Most versions will come with the all-wheel drive and a 9-speed automatic transmission will be standard.
