The 2020 Mazda CX-30 is the brand’s latest addition to its formidable SUV range and the model made the debut at the 2019 Geneva Auto Show. Mazda presented the Euro-spec version of the model which takes the position between the CX-3 and CX-5 in the brand’s SUV range while the US-spec CX-30 will break the covers later in the year.
Mazda claims that the new model provides urban-friendly dimensions of the CX-3 mixed with the practicality of the larger CX-5. The new, darling SUV splits the difference between the sub-compact and compact class while adopts brand’s familiar styling theme and driver-focused cockpit design. The model will also fit the Skyactiv powertrains available in diesel and petrol favors for the Old Continent market while the specs of the US version will appear later in the year.
2020 Mazda CX-30: Design, Size
The new 2020 Mazda CX-30 isn’t a surprise regarding its styling and structural design as it shares plenty of design cues with brand’s latest models and integrates lightweight construction intended to increase performance and efficiency. However, with its dimension the model slots between the sub-compact CX-3 and compact CX-5 models.
Having 173 inches from bumper to bumper, the model is 5 inches longer than the entry-level CX-3 while is same 5 inches shorter than larger CX-5. With 70 inches wide body, it is just inch wider than the CX-3 while is 60 inches tall. The wheelbase measuring 104 inches splits also the difference between the CX-3 and CX-5 with former rides on 3-inch shorter wheelbase while CX-5 has two inches longer unit.
While Mazda’s decision to squeeze a new SUV between the CX-3 and CX-5 may be a surprise the styling of the model isn’t. The CX-30 has similarly curved body panels like the rest of the brand’s SUV range and the styling elements are also familiar form. The new Mazda SUV has a pointing nose with the grille and headlights design familiar from brand’s other models.
The profile is defined with the sleek body sculpting and oversized black plastic wheel arches. The boot area of the model combines the elements of the CX-9 and 3 sedan. The rear spoiler, slanted rear glass, sculpted tailgate, slim taillights and nicely fitted rear bumper have some sporty flair.
The cockpit design of the new CX-30 is also a familiar form for Mazda loyal buyers. The driver-focused dash design comes with two-tone upholstery and contrasting trim inserts with the center touchscreen sitting atop the dash.
A three-spoke sports steering wheel and instrument panel bracketed by two air vents also look attractive and model has supportive seats.
Mazda will, of course, offer the new SUV with the latest infotainment platform and provide high-quality upholstery options and upscale features. The model will also equip the modern crash avoidance technologies but Mazda is yet to reveal full equipment list.
2020 Mazda CX-30: Powertrains
The all-new 2020 Mazda CX-30 shares the lightweight structure and running gear with the other models from the brand’s range.
Mazda equips the CX-30 with the G-Vectoring for better handling of the model and will also offer the sophisticated four-wheel-drive system as an option.
Power will provide Skyactiv engines in both petrol and diesel variants for the European version. There will be two petrol units including 2.0-liter inline-four and 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G inline-4 which exploits compression ignition to provide a near-diesel fuel efficiency. The petrol engines come also in combination with the 24-volt mild-hybrid system where the electric motor should improve acceleration and fuel economy.
Buyers in Europe will also have a chance to pick a 1.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine which comes without the mild-hybrid unit.
2020 Mazda CX-30: Arrival, Price
The 2020 Mazda CX-30 which the brand presented at the 2018 Geneva Auto Show is the Euro-spec version and will go on sale later in the year.
Mazda also confirmed the arrival of the CX-30 to the US but hasn’t revealed the release date and specs of the model. The CX-3 is expected to make the US debut later in the year. The US-spec version won’t offer the diesel powertrain.
Mazda hasn’t also commented on the price of the model but the first estimation puts it around $22, 000 base price considering its position in the brand’s SUV range and features.
