With recently redesigned, legendary off-road SUVs, the Jeep Wrangler and Mercedes G-Class, buyers will also get another alternative in form of the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender. The successor of the extremely capable Land Rover was spotted on several occasions while testing off-road and on-road and the prototype versions reveal some details about the model’s design.

The new Land Rover Defender will come in two forms initially. The short wheelbase DC 90 model with the two-door body and long wheelbase, four-door DC 110 will be available but Land Rover should also expand the lineup with the pickup truck version later in the life cycle.

The new Defender will use a modern, lightweight platform and adopt some styling cues from the latest Lander Rover SUVs. It will also get a more premium cabin and offer various powertrain options. All version should get some sort of electrification while the all-electric model is also expected later.

The new 2020 Land Rover Defender will enter the next generation based on the new lightweight platform which is unibody design called D7U used also on the Land Rover Discovery and Range Rover Sport.  

Visually, the redesigned Defender will combine upright, slab-sided stance with the brand’s modern styling elements. The boxy-shaped SUV will have a tall hood and two body styles including two-door and four-door versions. The front section will get similar grille and headlights treatment as the modern Land Rover SUVs.

Interior, equipment:

Interior of the new Land Rover Defender will get more upscale treatment than the previous generation. The models will have a similar dash design with the horizontal orientation like in the brand’s recent models. The dash will include large center touchscreen implementing the latest infotainment platform and features and there will also be a digital instrument cluster.

The model will also get a multi-functional steering wheel and offer various tech and comfort equipment. The brand hinted also a possible introduction of the ultra-luxury version. The model should also receive the latest crash avoidance and assist systems.

The redesigned 2020 Land Rover Defender will combine the aluminum-intensive, unibody platform with the fully independent front and rear suspension. This will provide more composed on-road ride but the off-road capability won’t be reduced either. The combination of the low-range transfer case and differential looks, as well as high approach and departure angles, will provide the go-anywhere capability.

As for the powertrain options, each version should adopt some kind of electrification like the 48-volt, mild-hybrid system. The conventionally powered units will include a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 and more potent turbocharged V-6. A diesel version will also be available depending on the market while the all-electric propulsion should also appear at some point.

The 2020 Land Rover Defender will break the covers late in the year. More details should appear in the meantime. The market launch is expected in 2020 and the introduction might be as the 2021 model. The price range should start in mid-$50, 000s.
