2020 Kia Sportage: Powertrains

The 2020 Kia Sportage returns on the market with the same engine options and available front- and all-wheel drive.

The Sportage LX, new S and EX rely on the 2.4-liter inline-4 engine with the power and torque output of 181 hp and 175 pound-feet respectively. The engine can be combined with both front- and all-wheel drive and standard 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Sportage will also provide more potent performance when fitted with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This engine is again available in the mix with the 6-speed automatic gearbox and both two- and four-wheel drive. The turbocharged unit makes 240 hp and torque of 260 lb-ft.

The Sportage can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

Fuel economy:

The compact Sportage with the front-wheel drive and the base engine under the hood should return 23 mpg city, 30 highway and combined fuel economy of 26 mpg. When the base unit sends power to all wheels the fuel efficiency will drop slightly. The 2.4L inline-4 4WD will achieve 22/29 mpg city/highway or 25 mpg combined.

With turbocharged unit and front-wheel drive, the Sportage will score 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway with the combined figure at 23 mpg. When the all-wheel drive is employed with the turbo-4 engine, the fuel efficiency should match 19 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

These ratings compared to well-established rivals don’t fare well. The front-wheel-powered Honda CR-V earns up to 30 mpg combined. The front-wheel configured Mazda CX-5 returns 28 mpg combined. The all-wheel-drive Subaru Forester matches 29 mpg combined.

2020 Kia Sportage: Arrival, Price

The refreshed 2020 Kia Sportage will go on the market in the second quarter of the year. Kia is yet to reveal the equipment organization and price. With the enhanced base equipment, the starting price should move slightly upper from the current base $24, 795.
