Jeep’s small Compass SUV competes in the crowded arena with names like Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, etc. The model is the second smallest SUV in the brand’s lineup after the platform-relative Renegade and sits below the Cherokee model. The Compass provides a broad range of customization options and gets attention with the handsome appearance but can also go against unbeaten trails while ensuring respectable on-road comfort and utility. The model prioritizes the comfort over the off-roading but is still more potent off-roader than most of the rivals.
The Compass arrived all-new for the 2017 model year and the 2020 model version won’t likely bring the mid-update as the things now stand. However, the compact SUV will get the plug-in hybrid version as the more rugged Renegade. Other aspects of the 2020 Jeep Compass should remain the same.
2020 Jeep Compass: Powertrains
The 2020 Jeep Compass will continue to use Jeep’s widespread 2.4-liter inline-4 engine which is also under the hood of the Renegade and Cherokee models. The engine makes 180 horsepower and torque of 175 pound-feet. Jeep offers front-wheel drive and optional all-wheel drive while the Trailhawk gets the AWD by default. The six-speed manual transmissions should remain in two base trims and there will also be the six- and nine-speed automatic transmissions.
The Trailhawk will also have its own Selec-Terrain system combined with other off-road features like lifted ground clearance, 20:1 crawl ratio, tow hooks and underbody protection.
The inline-4 engine and manual gearbox will return 32 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined. The front-wheel drive and automatic transmission will earn 31 mpg highway while the all-wheel drive will also remove 1 mpg from the highway mileage.
The plug-in hybrid Compass will use a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine from the Renegade where it makes 177 hp and torque of 200 lb-ft. The electric motor will be in the combination with the four-banger and combined output could be up to 240 hp. The battery should provide 31 miles of electric range.
The plug-in hybrid system will provide more precise torque delivery between the axles thanks to the setup where the electric engine power rear axle and the combustion engine spins the front wheels. An electric motor provides also an instant torque which also improves the off-road ability.
2020 Jeep Compass: Design
The Compass shares the platform with Jeep’s smallest Renegade SUV as well as with other models including the Fiat 500X and L and Toro pickup truck. The styling of the model blends cues of the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee and that should remain for the 2020 model year.
The 2020 Jeep Compass won’t also look much different when equipped with the plug-in hybrid setup. The seven-piece grille and hawk-eye headlights define the front end of the model. The profile has the sculpted fender flares and slightly slanted roofline. Trailhawk uses unique bumpers and wheels and adds more inches to the ground clearance. The models will appear with different wheel options and sizes ranging from 16 to 18 inches.
The next Compass will also stay the same inside the cabin. The balanced interior design looks nice and passengers get long-ride comfort. There is also up to 60 cubes of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 27 cubes with all seats up.
Compass will come with the 7-inch touchscreen and Apple Car Apply and Android Auto in the base trim where will also use the cloth upholstery. The simulated leather seat upholstery will appear in the next trim including also keyless entry and ignition.
Limited trim will lift the stake with the 8.4-inch touchscreen-based Uconnect infotainment system, leather upholstery, heated front seats and steering wheel, etc. Trailhawk will boost the off-road capability with the appropriate gear and add unique styling elements.
The model will also offer Advanced safety package with lane departure warning and intervention, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation.
2020 Jeep Compass: Release, Price
Jeep will launch 2020 Jeep Compass in the last quarter of the year. The details about the price and plug-in powertrain specs will appear closer to the release date. The base model will likely start around $22, 000 and reach $30, 000 in the better-equipped versions.
