Chevy’s mid-size, three-row Traverse SUV was all-new for the 2018 model year. The new-generation version puts the focus on the interior space and comfort and increased the legroom in the rear rows. The newest Traverse is also much lighter than the previous generation and can be had in various configurations. The turbocharged powertrain is also available and the model is also equipped with the modern in-car technologies. This model goes against fast-selling SUVs like Buick Enclave, Honda Pilot, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota Highlander and VW Atlas.
As for the 2020 Chevy Traverse, there won’t be many changes. The next mid-cycle update will bring more substantial upgrades in a year or two and until then we will get new color options, wheel design and see some changes in the equipment organization. Chevy will also move some features from the upper grades to lower ones.
2020 Chevy Traverse: Design
The second generation of the mid-size Traverse is based on the C1XX platform which is the crossover version of the E2XX architecture and the replacement of the Theta and Lambda platforms. Thanks to the implementation of the new lightweight design the newest Traverse is about 400 pounds lighter than before despite being longer and more spacious than its predecessor.
Thanks to the recent redesign the Traverse is a handsome model with more defined body lines and modern styling elements. The model has also plenty of the truck-like style.
The two-piece grille style and sharp headlights define the front-side look and crisp lines on the hood and side panels help it looks less boxy.
The base models will ride on the 18-inch wheels while all versions will come with LED daytime running lights. The LED headlights will appear in upper grades as well as 20-inch wheels. The new model year should bring new color options and wheel styles.
The 2020 Traverse won’t change much inside the cabin either. The passengers will enjoy generous interior space and cargo capacity. A well-organized and placed controls and nice trim details will also improve the impression. The Traverse will also provide massive cargo capacity up to 98 cubes.
The equipment list will include modern tech features and high-comfort goodies. The base version will come with OnStar technologies including 4G LTE connection and Wi-Fi hotspot. There will also be a MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch center screen and strong sound system.
More comfort features will appear in mid-range trims as well as an upgraded infotainment system with 8-inch touchscreen. The LT Leather trim will bring leather upholstery, a sunroof, navigation, 10-speaker Bose sound system, etc. Top two trims will add heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, driver memory setting, wireless charging, unique trim accents, etc.
The advanced safety equipment will also be available and should appear in lower grades for the new model year. The Traverse offers systems like adaptive cruise control, active lane control, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams in two top trims now. The model will also come with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and parking sensors.
2020 Chevy Traverse: Powertrains
The 2020 Chevy Traverse should again return with the two powertrain options but the turbocharged unit could appear in more trims.
Most Traverse versions will again be powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 combined with the smooth-shifting 9-speed automatic transmission. The engine will deliver 310 hp and torque of 266 pound-feet. Buyers should expect the fuel economy around 18 mpg city and 25 highways when configured with the front-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive, V-6-powered Traverse should return 17 mpg city and 25 highways.
An alternative to the naturally aspirated V-6 will be a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit which could appear in more trims than in the RS only which is the case with the current version. This engine produces 257 horsepower and torque of 295 pound-feet. With front-wheel drive, it will provide slightly better fuel efficiency than V-6 with 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.
With the required equipment, the Chevy Traverse will tow up to 5, 000 pounds.
2020 Chevy Traverse: Release, Price
The 2020 Chevy Traverse will go on sale later in the year. The price range should again start around $30, 000. The mid-range versions will settle around 40, 000. The best-equipped Travers will go over $50, 000.
