Audi’s recently introduced, full-size, luxury SUV provides seats for five in a premium cabin and gets attention with the sporty, coupe-like appearance. The model equips also the top tech and safety features. The power comes from the single turbocharged V-6 engine and all-wheel drive is standard. The Q8 goes against BMW X5 and X6, Mercedes GLE, Volvo XC90, Range Rover Sport, etc.
The model debuted for the 2019 market year and Audi is already preparing new versions to expand the lineup. The next 2020 Audi Q8 will get more potent and aggressively styled SQ8 and RS Q8 versions. Two models were already spotted testing but Audi still hides their specs and release date. Other changes for the new model year could include new trim option and color and wheel choices.
2020 Audi Q8: Powertrains
The handsome and well-equipped Audi Q8 can be had with the single engine in its first model year. Under the hood of the model is a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine paired with the 8-speed automatic transmission. This unit makes 335 hp and torque of 369 pound-feet. The model also gets the all-wheel-drive system by default which distributes 40 percent of the power to the front wheels and 60 percent to the rear under normal conditions. Depending on the road and conditions the system can route up to 70 percent of power up front or up to 80 percent to the rear wheels to provide optimal traction and performance.
With this setup, Audi Q8 needs 5.9 seconds for 60 mph and EPA estimated its efficiency to 22 mpg combined. The model comes also with the standard adaptive suspension with the air suspension available as an option.
SQ8 and RS Q8:
The SQ8 and RS Q8 will provide better performance and get an upgraded suspension and tweaked chassis. It’s still unconfirmed what powering options models will use.
The SQ8 could adopt something similar as the Q8 Sport Concept model which combined a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-8 engine and electric motor for the total output around 469 hp and torque of 516 pound-feet. If that would be the case, the model would be able to hit 60 mph in about 4.7 seconds.
The RS Q8 could reportedly use the powertrain from the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. This setup mixes a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V-8 with the electric motor for the total output around 670 hp and 626 pound-feet of torque. Another possibility could be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 like the Lamborghini Urus with the output around 641 hp. In any case, the model will use a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system, adaptive suspension and upgraded brakes to keep the model on the track.
2020 Audi Q8: Design
The Audi Q8 has a sportier appearance than the closely relative Q7. The massive, single-frame grille dominates up front combined with the sharp headlights and sporty front bumper. The line of the hood, profile sculpting and roofline give it a racier look than the Q7. The rear is also modern defined with nice taillights, sculpted tailgate and nicely fitted rear bumper.
The 2020 Audi Q8 should appear with two even sportier versions. The new models will highlight their performance orientation with the larger air inlets in the front bumper, larger brake rotors and dual-pipe exhaust setup.
Inside the cabin, Audi Q8 has modern dash design and employs high-quality materials combined with the latest tech features.
Even the base version will get keyless entry and ignition, a sunroof, tri-zone climate control, leather surfaces, heated front seats, etc. The standard tech equipment will include the brand’s new MMI system with larger 10.1-inch center screen for the navigation and entertainment and smaller 8.6-inch unit positioned below to manage inputs and climate controls. The base equipment will also cover forward collision warning and low-speed auto braking.
With more money spent for upper trims, buyers can get 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, wireless charging, head up display, upgraded leather upholstery, multi-contour seats with massaging function, a night-vision system, etc. The additional safety equipment will include blind-spot monitoring, active lane control, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition system.
2020 Audi Q8: Release, Price
Audi should reveal more details about new sportier versions by the end of the year. The 2020 Audi Q8 should again cost from around $67, 400. The RS Q8 could cost as much as $130, 000.
