Volvo redesigned its top-selling, compact XC60 crossover SUV for the 2018 model year. The new generation model again builds its reputation with outstanding interior and supreme safety equipment. The new platform and modernized exterior are also improvements over the previous generation. Volvo also offers a trio of powertrain options with turbocharges and supercharges as well as the most-powerful plug-in hybrid option. The newest XC60 also packs plenty of modern tech and luxury amenities.
After the recent thorough redesign, we expect the 2019 Volvo XC60 with some changes in the equipment organization and additional color options. Volvo won’t change model’s powertrain options while could add new trim choice.
2019 Volvo XC60: Design
For the recent redesign, the XC60 switched to the Scalable Product Architecture. This is the variation of the platform found in the larger XC90 and two models also share the same design language. The redesigned XC60 is also 2.4 inches longer and Volvo also stretched the wheelbase for 3.6 inches to provide more passenger space.
The styling of recently redesigned XC60 isn’t a large departure from the previous generation design, and model actually looks like smaller XC90. Volvo modernized model’s headlights which continue with the Thor Hammer motif and the taillights are the more modern version of the previous design. The model also boasts sleeker sheet metal and fresh grille design.
The upcoming 2019 Volvo XC60 won’t change visually. What buyers should expect for the new model year are new color options and possibly new exterior theme or wheel design.
Volvo’s vehicle has the class-top interiors regarding comfort and equipment. The XC60 cabin benefits from the recent redesign and passengers have more rear legroom while the quality of materials and finish follow the class leaders. The model, however, has among smallest cargo capacity behind the rear seats. If one wants to maximize the cargo space, with the rear seats folded, the cargo room will expand from 22.4 cubes to generous 63.3 cubes.
The XC60 will also be generous with luxury amenities and tech. All models will have the portrait-oriented touchscreen interface and Apple Car Play and Android Auto functionalities. Standard features will also be LED headlights, automatic wipers, leather upholstery, two-zone automatic climate control, ten-way power front seats, driver memory setting, etc.
Upgrades will include unique exterior and interior accents, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, four-zone climate control, upgraded leather, ventilated front and heated rear seats, adaptive suspension, premium Bowers and Wilkins sound system and much more. The 2019 XC60 will also be the top safety pick with systems like surround view cameras, Volvo’s Pilot Assist, blind-spot monitoring, etc.
2019 Volvo XC60: Powertrain options
Expect the 2019 Volvo XC60 with the same powertrain options. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will be available in two variants. The base T5 model will get power from the turbocharged version. This engine will provide 250 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque. The turbo- and supercharged version of the T6 model will produce 316 horsepower and torque of 295 pound-feet. These engines will come in the combination with the 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The T8 plug-in hybrid will exploit the combination of the T6 four-cylinder engine with the rear electric motor and a 10.4-kWh battery. The total output will 400 hp and 472 pound-feet of torque.
The T8 will hit 60 mph in 4.9 seconds while will have the electric range of 20 miles. The T6 will return 24 mpg combined while supercharged T6 will be at 23 mpg combined.
2019 Volvo XC60: Arrival, Price
The 2019 Volvo XC60 will arrive in the last quarter of 2018. The base version will cost from around $42k while the plug-in hybrid will cost from $53k.
