2018 VW Tiguan Allspace: Redesign, Trims, Price

The all-new 2018 VW Tiguan Allspace debuted at the 2017 North American Auto Show and new generation model follows demands of American buyers. In order to fit the third row of seats, this model has grown in size significantly and with the new proportions, it now fits between compact and mid-size class. The model also features refined exterior styling and upgraded interior.

With the longer wheelbase also comes upgraded engine options while VW has also added new high-tech active safety features. The Allspace version is actually a long wheelbase version which only comes in the US but the version with the standard wheelbase will also be available in the Europe. Buyers on the Old Continent will also have a chance to choose between many engine option while the VW Allspace will come the seaside with the single engine option.

The new 2018 VW Tiguan Allspace is designed on the ubiquitous MQB platform. The model rides on the 4.4-inch longer wheelbase than the version it replaces and the wheelbase has 109.9 inches now. On the other hand, additional 10.7 inches this model has in length for the total of 185.2 inches. This significant body stretch opened the room for the third row of seats and the cargo space is improved by about 57 percent.

From the visual perspective, the model follows brand’s latest design language principles. The details are similar as on the bulky Atlas. Up front is familiar grille design combined with the stylish headlights and larger lower openings. A sharp character line stretches from the front fenders over the door handles and ends in the LED taillights. It adds more visual interest to model’s look and model also has nicely sculpted rear end.

The cabin and equipment:

Inside the new VW Tiguan is more refined and of course spacious. The dash design is familiar but with upgraded elements while each trim feature better build quality. This the first VW Tiguan with the seats for seven and has a 40/20/40 second row which can fold flat, recline and slide.

The model will be available in S, SE, SEL and SEL Premium trims. The base model comes with brand’s Car-Net App-Connect which supports Android Auto, Apple Car Play and MirrorLink. The standard equipment also means 6.5-inch touchscreen, power assists, alloy wheels, roof rails, heated mirrors, and air conditioning.

The SE trim upgrades with the leatherette upholstery, upgraded 8-inch infotainment system with the SiriusXM radio, voice control, additional USB ports, keyless entry, push-button start, Car-Net Security and Service. This version also comes with the forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert.

If you step up to the SEL trim, expect Discover Media infotainment system with 8-inch screen and navigation. This trim will also include upgraded adaptive cruise control, power liftgate a sunroof, remote start and ambient lighting.

The top-of-the-line SEL Premium brings a 12.3-inch Digital Cockpit display, leather upholstery, premium sound system, hands-free liftgate and safety upgrades like the lane departure warning, automatic high beams and park assist.

2018 VW Tiguan Allspace: Powertrain

Powering the new 2018 VW Tiguan Allspace is an upgraded 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. This engine is the one and only option in the US while the Euro-spec version will get more engine options. The new engine can produce 184 hp which is actually less than the current version 200 hp. However, 221 lb-ft of torque makes the difference compared to previous 207 lb-ft.

The new crossover also boasts a new 8-speed automatic transmission which should have a positive effect on the fuel economy. However, VW hasn’t revealed the fuel economy numbers.

The power goes on either front wheels or through the 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The 4Motion system sends torque to the front wheels when driving conditions are normal. When needed, the system directs torque to the rear axle as well.

Release Date, Price

The sales of the 2018 VW Tiguan Allspace should start this summer. The base S model will be available from $25, 245. The 4Motion system adds to the cost $1, 300. Stepping to the SE version will cost $29, 980. The next level, Allspace SEL will come at $33, 450. For the SEL Premium trim, the price will jump to $37, 150.
