It hasn’t been secret anymore that VW is reading to offer the seven-seat SUV. The 2018 VW Atlas has been revealed and it will arrive at the showrooms in the spring of 2017. This large three-row SUV will be equipped with everything from advanced safety items over the modern infotainment platform to five trims and two powertrains. With all it promises to bring, it will be more than ready to go against models like the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, etc.
Why is it important:
Every major brand own an array of crossovers and SUVs in its lineup and many brands continue to expand its offer even further. In that way, they are trying to cover every possible need of the buyers and be more competitive in this lucrative segment. VW is, perhaps, a bit late in the game and two of its models the compact Tiguan and larger Touareg may not be enough but with the new Atlas, it might return in the race. With this model, VW is aiming the US market and Atlas will get everything it needs for this market. It will actually be the first SUV that VW will produce in America.
2018 VW Atlas: Platform, Styling, Interior
The 2018 VW Atlas will, of course, ride on VW’s MQB platform and will get all of its benefits. This time VW stretched this platform to its limits and the Atlas will have 198.3 inches in length. On the other hand, it will have 77.9 inches in width and 69.6 inches in height.
The styling takes some cues from the CrossBlue concept model but also has some similarities with the Q7 and Skoda Kodiaq. The grille is very familiar form from the mentioned concept model as well as the headlights. All models will have LED-based headlights accentuated with LED DRLs while LED taillights will be optional.
The model will also include familiar creases on the hood and other elements like the front bumper and rear side design. There will, however, be interesting profile-side lines that sit over the wheel wells and are connected with the line that runs bellow the door handles.
Inside, the Atlas will offer upscale features and design. Its big proportions will also provide seats for seven adults and their cargo. Easyly configurable middle and rear seats when folded down, will open 96.8 cu ft of cargo space. The long rear doors will also ensure an easy access for the rear passengers.
Tech and Safety features:
As for available equipment, the Atlas will come in five trims. All models will come with infotainment system with integrated Android Auto, Apple Car Play and Mirror Link. The model will also be available with an 8-inch center screen and will also offer a premium 12-speaker Fender sound system. If that is not enough, also available is so called Digital Cockpit which includes a 12.3-inches configurable instrument panel.
However, aside from mentioned entertainment and information feature, Atlas won’t lack with advanced safety features either. In that context, it will offer systems like forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, rear traffic alert, blind-zone monitoring lane departure warning, post-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, etc.
2018 VW Atlas: Powertrains
Two engine options will power the 2018 VW Atlas. As the standard offering comes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. It is capable for 238 hp while the torque should be somewhere between 258 and 273 lb-ft. If you want more power, a 3.6-liter six-cylinder will be available. It will be good for 280 hp and torque should be around 258 lb-ft.
Both engines will come with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive will be standard with the four-cylinder engine. The 4Motion all-wheel drive will be reserved for the six-cylinder engine powered.

The biggest SUV in VW’s lineup will hit showrooms next spring. The price of the 2018 VW Atlas will range from $35, 000 to $45, 000.
