Demand for three-row crossover SUVs is increasing and brands are expanding their lineup with new models. The Volvo XC90 is the range-topping crossover in Swedish automaker lineup and the first redesigned vehicle in last few years. With its redesign, it defined the path for other Volvo’s vehicles and the new generation of the XC60 will largely mimic the larger sibling in all aspects. The new XC60 will come for the 2018 model year while 2018 Volvo XC90 won’t introduce radical changes.
New for 2018:
A completely redesigned Volvo XC90 arrived for the 2016 model year with upgrades on all fronts. New plug-in hybrid powertrain and new Drive-E engines came alongside with new interior and exterior design. Volvo, of course, is keeping its strong safety and comfort credibility and these aspects were also upgraded. The upgrades continued for the 2017 model with inclusion of the new top trim and upgraded technology. The 2018 versions should also get the latest technology and revised equipment groups.
2018 Volvo XC90: Styling, Design, Platform
The new 2018 Volvo XC90 will continue to sit on the Volvo’s Scalable Product Architecture. It debuted on this model and will underpin other vehicles from this brand including the upcoming XC60. The exterior design of the XC90 will also serve as an inspiration for the new 2018 XC60 which also suggest that Volvo’s flagship SUV won’t experience radical changes in its appearance.
The model will rely on the classic SUV design but in Scandinavian interpretation. Crisp lines and shapes will help it to look elegant while brand’s signature elements will make a distinction from the rival models. Volvo’s elegant grille and “Thor’s Hammer” headlights will define its front fascia deign while rear side will also include familiar taillights.
The interior of the model will exhibit the design that was radically for the new generation of this model. Volvo has defined high standards in comfort and ascetics and it will continue to affirm its credibility in that regard. High-quality materials and a handsome mix of wood and metallic accents will give an attractive and warm vibe to the cabin.
There will also be Volvo’s time-proven and well-designed seats for long-ride comfort. A generous comfort and amount of the legroom will also be available for the mid-row passengers. The third row will be best for the children.
When it comes to the equipment, the new Volvo will unsurprisingly be well-equipped from the base models. It will offer standard LED lights, a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, premium upholstery, power adjustable front seats with power lumbar and driver memory setting, etc. Technology segment will include the latest infotainment system with vertically oriented center screen, navigation, smartphone compatibility, voice commands, a ten-speaker sound system, etc. The higher trims will bring upgraded upholstery, heated and ventilated seats, upgraded seats and infotainment and so on.
For the safety purposes, it will be armed with the host of advanced systems. It will include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, lane departure intervention and warning, a surround view system, blind-zone monitoring, rear cross traffic, etc.
2018 Volvo XC90: Performance
Like in the current form, the 2018 Volvo XC90 will be available with turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engines as well as with a plug-in hybrid version.
Entry-level T5 model will include a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine which might offer slightly better output ratings. It is now good for 250 hp and torque of 258 pound-feet. An 8-speed automatic will be standard transmission system while this version will be available with either front- or all-wheel drive.
The T6 model will use a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive. Expect the similar output figures as the current 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The plug-in hybrid will combine T6 model’s engine with an electric motor which current capability is 87 hp. Total output in the actual version is 400 hp but new XC90 might improve this score as well as the fuel economy and electric range.
