Every major brand has a luxury crossover model in its lineup and because the popularity of these vehicles continues to grow the brands are investing great effort to offer more and more crossover and SUV models. Volvo is also keen to expand its crossover lineup with the new XC40 while it redesigned its flagship model XC90. But before the new model comes, Volvo is focusing on the new generation of its best-selling Volvo XC 60 which will come as the 2018 Volvo XC60.
New for 2018:
The heavily disguised prototype of the second-generation XC60 was caught several times. However, the thick camouflage doesn’t reveal a lot but some detectable cues give some idea about the new model. It is clear that new XC60 will get strong inspiration from the larger XC90 model. In that context, the models will share the same platform and will have similar design cues, interior styling, powertrain lineup and technology features. However, with more compact proportions and lower price, the new XC60 will be affordable for the broader range of buyers than its larger cousin and it might even expand its current population of fans.
2018 Volvo XC60: Platform, Design
The new generation 2018 Volvo XC60 will utilize brand’s SPA modular platform which has already been the base of the new V90 wagon and S90 sedan models as well as of the mentioned XC90. Volvo invested enormous amount of money into this modular platform which has been designed on the same principles as other modern platforms. Lightweight structure, improved rigidity, flexible widths and wheelbases as well as support for different powertrains and modern technology are advantages of this modern architecture. All that will improve performance, efficiency and already immersive safety ratings of this model.
Being based on the same platform as the larger Xc90, the new XC60 will also adopt similar exterior design. However, smaller proportions of this model will help it to have more athletic appearance than the larger SUV model. That will be especially notable from its profile side thanks to the more aggressive roofline and rear quarter panels. On the other hand, the model will also include signature Thor’s Hammer headlights and sleeker grille design. There will also be a familiar form of the taillights.
The cabin design of the new XC60 will also follow the similar strategy as the S90 and XC90 models. The model will include modern dash design with the large center screen that sits between two air vents. Thanks to the enhanced technology, the model will include less physical controls and will feature cleaner design.
The new XC60 will also provide unmatched comfort thanks to probably the best-in-class seat design. Added to that will be handsome interior textures and patterns followed with high material and build quality.
The safety is also area Volvo gives its best and the new XC60 will also offer plenty of safety features. There will be systems like forward collision warning, lane departure warning and intervention, auto cruise control, autopilot system, etc. The autopilot system should be capable of providing autonomous acceleration, braking and steering at speeds up to 80 mph.
2018 Volvo XC60: Powertrains
Motivating the new 2018 Volvo XC60 will be a similar lineup of the powertrains as on the XC90. Expect the T5 version with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine capable of producing around 240 hp.
The T6 version gets a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder unit with projected output of more than 300 hp.
The model will utilize an eight-speed automatic transmission and will come with both the front- and all-wheel drive.
Volvo will also offer the T8 plug-in hybrid version which will be capable of the similar performance as the XC90 T8 version.
