Mazda is listening to buyers’ demands and as the response, the new crossover SUV available with either seven or six seating configurations will be the new member of brand’s lineup. The new 2018 Mazda CX-8 is the crossover SUV available with the third row of seats but designed for the specific Japanese demands.
As the name suggests the CX-8 is smaller than Mazda’s flagship CX-9 but brand’s biggest SUV is too large for the Japanese market where Mazda now offers the CX-5. The CX-8 brings something from both models, the CX-5 and CX-9, but also features some distinctive cues. It will get the oil burner which will also travel to the US in the new CX-5 but Mazda won’t offer this new model there.
2018 Mazda CX-8: Design
Mazda released the single teaser shot of model’s interior but spy photographers also caught undisguised model with the design which has the near-identical exterior look as the larger CX-9.
The 2018 Mazda CX-8 will, of course, implement brand’s dynamic KODO design language with the grille and other elements from the front fascia that mimic those on the flagship CX9. The lines will be smooth but the model will have the roof line that slopes faster than it is the case on the CX-9. The difference will also be on the rear quarter glass and some details on model’s tail will be unique.
The model will have similar taillights, chrome bar and dual exhaust setup as the CX-9 but the rear bumper and the area surrounding the license plate will be different. The CX-8 will, on the other hand, ride on the 17-inch alloy wheels that share the same design as those on the CX-5 but Mazda will also offer some options.
As far as dimensions are concerned, the model will ride on the identical wheelbase as the CX-9 which measures 115.3 inches. The model will, on the other hand, have about 193 inches in the length and will be 72.4 inches wide. That makes it 6.9 inches shorter and about 4.8 narrower than the CX-9.
As for the design of model’s cabin, it will also apply the same principles as Mazda’s largest SUV. The dash design will be very familiar from the CX—9 as well as the design of the seats. Mazda promises that adults will feel comfortable in the third row but also revealed that six and seven-seat configurations will be available.
The difference will be the captain chairs available for the middle row which Mazda doesn’t offer for the CX-9 model. Some differences will also be seen in the details on the door panels.
On the other hand, the tech and safety features will mimic those available in the CX-9.
2018 Mazda CX-8: Powertrain
It isn’t the secret that 2018 Mazda CX-8 will have the diesel engine under the hood. A 2.2- liter SkyActive-D turbocharged inline-4 four engines will be available in the CX-5 for the US market as well. The power and torque figures are still the mystery but the version of this engine delivers 173 hp and torque of 310 pound-feet.
Mazda will offer this engine with the six-speed automatic transmission. The front-wheel drive will come by default with the option for the all-wheel drive.
It would be interesting to see what fuel economy will this combination return.
2018 Mazda CX-8: Arrival, Price
As we said earlier the 2018 Mazda CX-8 is aimed for the Japanese market only at this time. The model should go on sale late this year or early next. Mazda hasn’t said anything about the price.
