Kia presented the Trailster Concept model at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show and this Soul-based version, according to some industry speculations, could soon enter the production. Since the debut of the concept model, it was recognized as something that would fit nice to Soul’s lineup. The version with a more rugged look and multi-terrain capability would round current Soul’s range perfectly.

Kia’s popular model can now be had as the conventionally powered or EV version and the 2018 Kia Trailster would be the transition from the urban vehicle to all-wheel drive, off-road ready version. 2018 Kia Trailster: Design

Kia hasn’t commented on rumors about the production of the 2018 Kia Trailster but if this model arrives it won’t look much different from what we saw on the concept version. The production model would retain the basic shape and profile of the popular Soul. However, what would make difference are lifted ride height and additional body cladding.

The front of the model would have a more muscular bumper and underbody protection. The LED fog lights will also be in the front lower section while upper section will include the thinner version of the tiger nose grille and modern headlights.

Unique on the model will also be the wheel design and lower body cladding. The production version won’t likely get the rollback canvas roof as the concept car.

The cabin of the model is expected to retain the basic design of the regular Soul but with the addition of unique trim accents, all-wheel drive controls, etc. The model will also include brand’s latest infotainment system and upgraded safety equipment. It should also offer some luxury options.

In this setup, the combustion engine powers the front wheels through the six-speed automatic transmission.

However, what makes the difference is the rear-mounted electric motor which powers the rear wheels and provides the all-wheel-drive capability. The electric motor contributes with 36 hp and torque of 100 lb-ft. In total, this system can provide 220 hp and 285 lb-ft of twisting. The electric motor is fed by the 1.2-kWh lithium-ion battery.

What is also important about this setup, Kia claims that hybrid solution makes this model about 30 percent more economical in city ride and about 10 percent on the highway compared to the regular version.
