The 2018 Kia Stonic is brand’s subcompact crossover SUV designed to battle with hot rivals like the Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, Nissan Juke, Chevy Trax and with the related Hyundai Kona. The new Stonic and its sister car, the Kona made their recent premiere. The smallest crossover in the Kia family shares the platform with the fourth-generation Kia Rio but models also have similar interiors. The look of the model is the combination of brands familiar cues and unique details while the Stonic also comes with all, modern tech and safety features. The buyers will definitely have the hard decision to make in the growing subcompact class.
2018 Kia Stonic: Design
Korean new subcompact crossover, the 2018 Kia Stonic will ride on the platform that underpins the fourth-generation Kia Rio. The platform is solid and safe structure made of the lightweight materials and the share of the high-tensile steel is about 51 percent. The model is also designed to maximize the interior space while also providing decent cargo capacity.
Dimensionally, the Stonic is very similar to the sister car the Hyundai Kona. The model has 163 inches in length while the width and height are 69.3 and 59.8 inches respectively.
Visually, the Stonic wears many familiar brand’s design cues but it definitely more athletic-looking crossover than larger models in the Kia family. Brand’s tiger nose grille is, of course, there combined with the angular headlights and sculpted front bumper. Additional character to the new Stonic also adds strong creases on the hood and sharp horizontal sculpting on the side panels. The lower body cladding, rear spoiler and up to 20 two-tone body color combination also contribute to model’s appearance.
Interior of the Stonic will follow the similar design pattern as its platform donor, the newest Kia Rio. The dash will feature the simple but modern look. All models will get touchscreen-based infotainment platform including also the smartphone integration features. The Stonic will also offer the wide range of customization options but will also meet the modern safety standards.
The systems which will make the ride easier and safer will include now common advanced driver aids. The model will include adaptive cruise control, collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
2018 Kia Stonic: Powertrains
Kia hasn’t revealed details about the engines that 2018 Kia Stonic will include for the US market. However, the Old Continent version will be available with small and fuel-efficient displacements. The range of the petrol units will include a 1.25- and 1.4-liter naturally aspirated units with the power output around 85 hp and 98 hp respectively. A turbocharged 1.0-liter three-cylinder turbo engine will produce around 118 horsepower. On the diesel side, available will be a 1.6-liter unit.
Kia will likely offer the front-wheel drive and the manual gearbox as standard in the initial phase. However, the automatic option should also be available.
2018 Kia Stonic: Arrival, Price
More details about the 2018 Kia Stonic should emerge soon when it makes the world premiere this September. The model will be available by the end of this year. As the reference, the expected price in the UK is from about £14,000.
