2018 Honda CR-V: News, Hybrid version, Arrival

The fully redesigned, the fifth generation Honda CR-V has already been on sale since December 2016. One of the best-selling models in the compact crossover class is again up to the expectations and despite the model is new from the ground up, the tested recipe is again applied. However, after the last Shanghai Auto Show, Honda revealed what is the next mission for the CR-V model and that is the hybrid version. Honda presented the CR-V Hybrid as the model which will go on sale in the China but remained tightlipped about important details and will this version reach the US market as the 2018 Honda CR-V. We see the CR-V hybrid version in the US as the sure bet but the release date and specification are still the open questions.

2018 Honda CR-V: Styling, Design

Honda won’t, of course, change much on the new 2018 Honda CR-V as this model was all-new for the 2017 model year. Planted on the Civic’s platform and slightly longer wheelbase the new-gen model delivers better driving dynamics and interior accommodation. It is also marginally wider and longer.

On the other hand, the styling of the new generation CR-V is slightly more sculpted and some elements give it up-scale look. All models come with the LED running lamps and chrome strip connects the headlights. Honda also placed the chrome strip bellow the rear window combining it with the attractive headlights. The model also looks classier when rides on the 18-inch wheels and with the fog lights which are available in the EX trim. The Touring model adds to that more chrome details and dual-chrome exhaust tips which also add to model’s appearance.

Interior, Features:

Honda made the cabin of the CR-V more stylish and appealing than in the previous generation and equipment is up to date as well. The cabin is also better isolated from the outside and more comfortable for the rear passengers. Modernized dash and infotainment system is also the step forward but all tech is not available for the base LX version. Honda might improve that and Honda Sensing suite might become the standard equipment. There, Honda offers adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring with the rear cross-traffic alert.

2018 Honda CR-V: Powertrains

The engine options on the 2018 Honda CR-V will remain the same. The base 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine delivers 184 hp and torque reaches 180 lb-ft. The redesign brought the turbocharged engine option in the form of 1.5-liter inline-4 unit. This power mill can produce 190 hp and torque of 170 lb-ft. The transmission unit will be the CVT sending power to the front or all four wheels.
The fuel economy will be around 28 mpg combined and around 30 mpg combined with the base and turbocharged engines respectively. However, the all-wheel drive versions will return about 1 mpg less in both cases.

Honda wasn’t concrete with the details about the hybrid powertrain. So, no power, torque, and fuel economy numbers have been provided. The model should, however, feature brand’s Sport Hybrid two-motor setup. The system should combine the Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder engine, two electric motors and battery pack like the Accord Hybrid sedan. This system provides 212 hp in the Accord and fuel economy is 48 mpg combined. The Accord is around 3,400 pounds in weight and the CR-V is close to that number as well depending on the driveline. Of course, the sedan model has the better aerodynamics and more pounds to the CR-V will add additional power hardware. However, if this setup would be used in the CR-V hybrid, it should easily match or beat hybrid versions of the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue. The RAV4 is rated at 32 mpg while Rogue hybrid returns 34 mpg combined.

2018 Honda CR-V: Arrival, Price

The CR-V hybrid version will hit Chinese market by the end of this year. The price is yet to be revealed. However, the 2018 Honda CR-V should also come in the US late this year. We will see about the hybrid version. The price range should start from around $24,000.
