In the current form, the GMC Terrain is still competitive crossover. It falls somewhere between compact and mid-size class. The model features quiet and flexible cabin with a practical sliding rear seat. There are also powerful V-6 engine and good suspension. However, this model has been in the same generation since the 2010 model year. On the other hand, many of its rivals have been redesigned in the meantime and in order to stay relevant the all-new Terrain will come soon. It will enter into the second generation as the 2018 GMC Terrain.
What will be changed?
The new generation of the GMC Terrain will present this model as the all-new vehicle. The model will come on the new platform and will change its dimensions. Styling will also evolve from the current form. The new generation will also bring refinement in its cabin and technology upgrades. It should also get improved powertrains.
2018 GMC Terrain: New Platform, Design
The new 2018 GMC Terrain is going to change from its foundation and it will switch from the current platform to the new highly modular architecture. It is the D2XX platform that also underpins its corporate cousin Chevy Equinox as well as Chevy Cruze, Buick Envision, etc. The new platform brings some important structural improvements in key areas which will have the positive impact on aspects like performance, efficiency and safety. Improved structure rigidity, reduced weight and better drag coefficient will provide mentioned results. Expected weight loss is around 200 pounds.
On the other hand, the model should also experience some dimension changes. Similarly as the closely related Equinox the model will have reduced proportions which will put it into the compact crossover segment.
Styling-wise it promises sleeker, a more masculine design that the current model. The evolution of the current corporate language will make this model to look less-upright and also more aerodynamic. The model will feature more raked windshield and lower roof line. The design will also be inline with the redesigned Acadia model. The model’s face will also mimic design of the Sierra truck.
Interior and Technology:
Interior of the new Terrain will provide better comfort, ergonomics, and improved technologies. Despite that model will feature more compact dimensions, well-arranged interior space will provide improved comfort and driving experience.
There will be two rows of seats including highly practical sliding rear seat with generous legroom.
The model will also benefit from upgraded in-vehicle technologies. That will provide better and safer driving experience. The Terrain will get the latest GMC’s IntelliLink infotainment platform with features like smartphone integration, 4G LTE, WiFi hotspot and charging, strong sound system, voice commands, etc.
On the safely ground, the new platform will bring stronger body structure and better safety scores. The model should also include ten airbags and advanced safety features like forward collision alert, rear cross traffic, lane keeping assist, blind zone monitoring, tire pressure monitor, etc.
2018 GMC Terrain: Performance
The current Terrain model is available with two engine options. The base 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine makes 182 hp and torque of 172 pound-feet. The much more powerful option comes from the larger Acadia and it is a 3.6 liter V-6 engine. It is good for 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque.
On the other hand, as some sources suggest, the new 2018 GMC Terrain should go with engine downsizing and turbocharging, similarly as the new Equinox. The base engine should be a new turbocharged 1.4 liter Ecotec four-cylinder unit. The more potent option should be 2.0 liter turbo-powered four-cylinder engine.
A six-speed transmission and eight-speed option should also be available. Front-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive optional.
The base engine option promises fuel economy close to the 40 mpg on the highway.

The new generation 2018 GMC Terrain should debut in mid-way 2017. The price range should start from around $25, 000.
