The second-generation of GMC’s smallest model debuted at the 2017 North American Auto Show. The new from the ground up, 2018 Terrain comes in SL, SLE, SLT and range-topping Denali trim. Smaller but better in all aspects the new GMC Terrain will go against the other small crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4 and Jeep Cherokee. The top-end version of this model, 2018 GMC Terrain Denali will get exclusive exterior and interior treatment while will also offer the top-notch tech and convenience features.
What’s new on the new-gen Terrain?
The new generation Terrain comes as the all-new model from the ground up. It sits on the new platform, features new exterior and interior while also offers the new range of turbocharged engine options including the fuel-efficient diesel engine. The new version also benefits from the newest tech and safety features.
2018 GMC Terrain Denali: Design
The new iteration of the GMC Terrain rides on the GM’s D2XX platform which also underpins the redesigned Equinox. The new model measures 5 inches less from the bumper-to-bumper while its wheelbase is also smaller.
The styling of the new Terrain fits with GM’s newest design approach and model’s shape is much like on the larger Acadia. The new version, however, features larger grille and new headlights with the C-shaped LED accent lights. The rear side of the model also has C-shaped taillights and more sculpted design.
As for the Denali trim, these models have standard LED headlights and satin chrome grille between them. This premium version also rides on the 19-inch bright alloy wheels. Other details distinguishing this trim from others is more chrome which can be seen on the door handles, roof rails, mirror caps and side moldings.
Interior, Tech and Safety:
Inside the Terrain is the combination of the great styling, premium materials, and top-class comfort. The Denali trim brings the leather upholstery and unique trim accents. The front seats feature contrasting stitching and have heating and ventilating features while the rear seats also have the heating feature.
The max cargo space of the model is 63.3 cu ft while behind the rear seats it has 29.6 cu ft.
On the tech front, the Terrain Denali benefits from the latest, easy-to-use infotainment system with the Android Auto and Apple Car Play compatibility. The center touchscreen has 8-inches in diagonal and the familiar interface.
The safety equipment is also upgraded with latest driver active aids. Available in the new Terrain will be low speed forward automatic braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, a surround view cameras, etc.
2018 GMC Terrain Denali: Powertrains
The newest Terrains will be available with the trio of the turbocharged engines including the diesel-powered unit. The same engines powers the latest Equinox.
The base engine which will power the front-drive models will be a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit. It can produce 170 hp and torque of 203 pound-feet.
The 2018 GMC Terrain Denali will, however, get the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo-4. This engine can deliver 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. A 9-speed automatic transmission works in the combination with this engine and all-wheel drive.
For the first time, the Terrain will also be available with the 1.6-liter turbodiesel which can also be found in the new Equinox and Cruze models. This engine will come with the 6-speed automatic transmission and should produce around 136 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque.
The fuel economy is expected to be around 30 mpg highway with the petrol engine. Around 40 mpg highway will be with the diesel burner.
2018 GMC Terrain Denali: Price, Availability
The 2018 GMC Terrain Denali will go on sale this summer. The price of the new Terrains will start in mid-20,000 while the Denali models will cost around $40k.
