Despite we waited a bit longer than expected, the brand-new Ford Expedition is just a step from the dealerships. Ford presented its all-new, aluminum-bodied, F-150-based SUV at the Chicago Auto Show and big body vehicle is better in all aspects. The Expedition looks sleeker and has grown in size. The interior is also more spacious and loaded with the latest tech achievements. Ford also uses turbo V-6 and 10-speed transmission to move this huge vehicle while it comes in XLT, Limited and Platinum trims. There is again an extended wheelbase version but instead of the EL nomenclature the redesigned long wheelbase model will be marketed as the 2018 Ford Expedition MAX. This name has already been used in the Canada and from now Ford is going with the MAX badge in the US as well.
2018 Ford Expedition MAX: Design
The fourth-generation Expedition switched to the hydroformed T3 chassis which version also underpins the best-selling F-150. The modern design of this platform combines lightweight high-strength materials for improved rigidity but reduced weight. An aluminum-formed body actually sits on the boron steel constructed chassis. A modern design provided about 300 pounds of the weight loss despite the new models are both longer and wider. The standard version has 4 inches longer wheelbase and 1 inch wider body. However, the 2018 Ford Expedition MAX is by 1 inch longer than the previous generation. When comparing two models, the Expedition MAX is about a foot longer than the standard version and that means 16.8 cu ft of additional cargo and more rear head room for your adventures.
Styling wise, Ford did a great job on making the new Expedition to look sleeker and distinguishing it from the F-150. The model has sleeker silhouette thanks to the softer body lines and it combines some truck-like elements with the SUV body lines. The C-shaped headlights mimic the design from the F-150 and the grille is also inspired by the refreshed truck. The C theme is also used for the fog light bezels and the same motif can be seen on model’s taillights.
From the profile perspective, we see some similarities with the Explorer model. The Expedition has strong and straight character line and a higher belt line. That means that model has less glass.
Inside both models are more spacious and better equipped than the previous generation. The Expedition can seat up to the eight people in the three rows or seven with the captain’s chairs.
The design of the dash is very similar as on the F-150. The model has large vertical air vents and the center screen between them.
The middle and rear seats can be folded flat while the middle row can also tilt forward to provide easier access to the last row.
On the other hand, the new Expedition is better equipped. It comes with Sync3 infotainment system with the 8-inch touchscreen. Ford also offers wireless phone charging, four 12-volt outlets, an 110-volt outlet, WiFi hotspot for 10 devices in the area up to 50 feet from the vehicle, panoramic glass roof, adjustable cargo shelf and much more.
The Expedition also offers the latest safety aids. It comes with the adaptive cruise control, active line control, blind-spot monitoring, surround view cameras, trailer assist, etc.
2018 Ford Expedition MAX: Powertrain
Powering the new 2018 Ford Expedition MAX will be the combo which should provide the class best towing capability. Ford hasn’t revealed details regarding towing, power and fuel economy ratings. However, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 can produce 375 hp and torque of 470 pound-feet in the new F-150. We expect similar numbers for the Expedition as well.
The Expedition will also use Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system with the two-speed transfer case. The model will also be available with the electronic rear locking differential. It will also employ the Terrain Management System from the Explorer with modes for the various conditions.
2018 Ford Expedition MAX: Arrival, Price
The 2018 Ford Expedition MAX will arrive in the fall. Ford will reveal the pricing closer to the arrival.
