Diesel scandal still shakes the US and after the 2017 model year redesign, the Q7 returns the stateside with trim specific changes only. So as the things now stand, the performance-oriented, twin turbo diesel powered Audi SQ7 TDI won’t come to the US for the 2018 model year but buyers in Canada will have the chance to try the 2018 Audi SQ7 TDI when it arrives this fall.
This model has already been available on the Old Continent and other global markets. It packs powerful turbo diesel V-8 engine with electric-powered compressor and also uses a 48-volt electric system. This electric system also powers electro-mechanical active roll stabilization system. The styling and interior of this model are also unique and it is loaded with the luxuries and tech features.
2018 Audi SQ7 TDI: Impressive power hardware
Between the front fenders, the 2018 Audi SQ7 TDI has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine. This engine delivers 426 horsepower and impressive torque of 663 pound-feet. The turbochargers are placed in the sequential setup providing the engine with the boost pressure. However, the conventional turbochargers can’t provide instant boost pressure at low speeds and in order to bypass the turbo lag, Audi installed the electric compressor. The electric motor based compressor can provide instant boost pressure in less than 250 milliseconds at any time. Thanks to that, the maximum torque is available between 1,000 and 3, 250 rpm.
Audi combines this engine with the 8-speed automatic transmission, all-wheel drive, and all-wheel steering system. Add to that electronically controlled roll bars and air suspension and you get the precise and responsive handling on all terrains.
With such impressive powertrain, the SQ7 TDI reaches 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and has maximum speed limited at 155 mph.
It is also important to mention that power for the electric compressor and electro-mechanical roll bars come from the 48-volt electric system fed by the lithium-ion battery pack.
2018 Audi SQ7 TDI: Exterior and Interior
From the outside perspective, the 2018 Audi SQ7 TDI has also been treated in a special way. The model has sportier bombers than conventional versions and rides on the unique 20-inch wheels with 235 mm tires. However, you can also opt for 21- and 22-inch wheels available in several designs. The LED headlights are standard and models feature specific door trim.
Inside, power and heated sport front seats get the Alcantara and leather treatment. The multi-functional sports steering wheel with the shift paddles is in the front of the driver as well as the Virtual Cockpit instrument panel. The model also includes MMI infotainment and navigation, Bose 3D sound system, four-zone climate control, ambient lighting, etc.
The passengers can also rely on 24 active driver aids. Some of the systems are the surround view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, parking assist, adaptive cruise control, active line assist, side assist and blind-zone detection, rear cross-traffic alert, Traffic Jam Assist, etc.
