The Chrysler in now the brand of the sedans and minivans. On its portfolio, it currently has two sedans the 200 and 300 models plus the all-new Pacifica minivan. However, the things could change in the next years because the Chrysler will allegedly expand the lineup of its vehicles. What has been reported is that Chrysler has the plan of joining to other brands in the crossovers and SUVs offensive. It was firstly expected that the new small sedan named the 100 will enter the market but it seems now that priorities have changed. In that context, we could soon see the 2018-2019 Chrysler Crossover and SUV models.
Why is it important for the Chrysler?
Well, it’s not the news that popularity of the crossovers and SUVs in the constant progression and every major brand is investing in the new models. The sales of sedans and minivans are decreasing in the last few years while the sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks are now in the focus of the majority of buyers. Because it should not be the surprise that Chrysler wants to join this game and improve its profit.
2018-2019 Chrysler Crossover and SUV models: What we know about these models
Unfortunately, the information about 2018-2019 Chrysler Crossover and SUV models is minimal and there hasn’t been the word from the Chrysler about these models. Some reports suggest that Chrysler intends to offer the smaller five-seat crossover to replace the Dodge Journey and to go against the models like the Ford Edge and Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. On the other hand, the larger full-size three-row SUV with the Chrysler badge should also see the light of the day and stand against the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, etc.
What names could they get
Well, it is another mystery. To remind you, the Chrysler had two sport utility vehicles not so far ago. The full-size Aspen was new model for year 2007 and discontinued just a two model years later. The Pacifica was the mid-size crossover available between 2004 and 2008. The Pacifica is now reserved for Chrysler’s all-new and first ever plug-in hybrid 2017 Pacifica minivan. So, potential names for the new models could be the Aspen or even the Town & Country as the Pacifica replaced this minivan. Of course, Chrysler could use any name for the new models.
We don’t know much about the design of the potential models. However, what we should expect is that Chrysler’s future vehicles will naturally be based on the new Pacifica platform.
On the other hand, Chrysler’s new crossover could have a lot in common with the Jeep Cherokee K8 which should have three row of seats and should appear in the China. However, the model with the Chrysler badge should offer seats for the five and will have brand’s signature elements.
The seven-seat SUV should, on the other hand, adopt much from the Pacifica minivan. It should have similar front fascia and should include similar lighting clusters and smooth body lines. This model should be larger than a Dodge Durango.
The available features on the new models should largely mimic the things what we currently can get on the new Pacifica minivan and sedan models. Of course, new model years will bring some upgrades in technology and safety features. What we don’t expect is the Stow ‘n’ Go seat feature.
2018-2019 Chrysler Crossover and SUV models: Powertrains
When it comes to the powering units of the 2018-2019 Chrysler Crossover and SUV models, the Chrysler can adopt many options from the Fiat/Chrysler parts bin. The mid-sized crossover, however, should offer four- and six-cylinder power units. The front -wheel drive should be standard and all-wheel drive optional. The Plug-in hybrid powertrain is also a possibility.
The larger SUV should get the V-6 engine and plug-in hybrid option as well. The new version of the 3.6-liter V-6 which currently powers the Pacifica minivan and produces 287 hp sounds like the natural solution. The plug-in hybrid combines the version of the V-6 and two electric motors which get the power from the 16-kWh battery pack. The similar setup could also be used on the new SUV model as well.
2018-2019 Chrysler crossover and SUV models: Arrival
Chrysler hasn’t yet said anything on the rumors. However, the 2018-2019 Chrysler Crossover and SUV models should come in the next two years. The bigger SUV should come as the 2018 model and can debut in late 2017. On the other hand, the smaller crossover should hit the roads as the 2019 model and debut at some auto show in 2018.
