After it introduced the new seven-seat Atlas at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show and then presented the redesigned Tiguan at the 2017 Detroit Show, VW is now working on the third-generation Touareg. Porotype of the redesigned Touareg was spotted while testing with camouflaged front end and tail. The model seems to be in the late phase of testing and VW might bring the new Touareg to the Shanghai Auto Show this April. The new iteration of this model will go on sale as the 2018 VW Touareg and go against the redesigned BMW X5, Mercedes GLE and Jeep Grand Cherokee.
New for 2018:
The next Touareg will come as the fully revamped model but VW still hides all specifics related to model. However, based on some reports and spy photos, we know that the new Touareg will come on the new platform and significantly lighter. The model will also feature refreshed look and interior and will benefit from the updated tech and safety features. The upgraded engine lineup will power the new model and available will be both the gasoline and diesel units.
2018 VW Touareg: Platform, Design
The fully redesigned 2018 VW Touareg will ride on VW’s MLB Evo platform which has already been exploited by the newest Audi Q5 and Q7 and the Bentley Bentayga. This platform will also underpin the next Porsche Cayenne and Lamborghini SUV. It will bring improvements on many fronts for the new Touareg including reduced weight, better performance, upgraded electrification and driver-assist tech. Thanks to the new platform, the new-gen Touareg should lose about 440 pounds. Some reports also suggest that the new version will also grow in length from the current 4.8 m to nearly 5 meters while might also be slightly wider.
From the visual perspective, the Touareg should look more dynamic and wider. It should feature crisper lines and modernized front and rear end. The front fascia will adopt larger grille and new thin headlights. Up front, model will also have the C-shaped DRLs and sportier bumper.
The tail will exhibit the new taillights and more sculpted tailgate. The profile will also get more pronounced beltline running over the door handles and sculpted fenders.
Interior, Tech features:
Inside, the new Touareg will feature more upmarket design. Upgraded materials and more interior space will improve the comfort of passengers. The dash will be reworked adding the new center stack and digital instrument panel.
On the technology front, the new SUV will get the latest infotainment system with the massive center screen and Gesture Control Technology. An active info display should also be available. The safety aspect will also improve with the surround view system, some new active safety systems and the model might even get the semi-autonomous tech.
2018 VW Touareg: Powertrains
There is no doubt, that depending on the market the new 2018 VW Touareg will be available with the range of petrol and diesel engine options. The 3.0-liter V-6 engines will be available in both petrol and diesel configurations. In the US, the model will again come equipped with the V-6. But it is also possible that VW would introduce the new inline-4 engine as the base variant.
On the other hand, in the later phase of the model year, the Touareg should also offer plug-in hybrid powertrains. According to some sources, VW will combine a 3.0-liter V-6 TDI and 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI with the electric motor and 8-speed automatic transmission.
We don’t know power specifications of the new powertrains as well as the fuel economy but the lighter structure and upgraded engines will lead to improved performance and efficiency.
