2018 Toyota Fortuner: News, Design, Engines, Price

The Fortuner is Toyota’s mid-size SUV with serious off-road capability plus it can seat seven people and tow as the champ. The model has the same DNA as the fabled Hilux pickup and two models also share the same design philosophy but feature distinctive cabins. Two models were redesigned in 2015 but the second-generation Fortuner arrived at some markets as the 2017 version. Like the Hilux, this model isn’t available the stateside. Toyota might expand the safety offer with the missing active systems to reach the standards of some rivals with the arrival of the 2018 Toyota Fortuner. Aside from that, the infotainment system might see some updates as well as the features across the trims. The bigger upgrades are not expected.

2018 Toyota Fortuner: Styling

The styling of the 2018 Toyota Fortuner will use the similar recipe as the Hilux pickup but with the wagon-like profile and upright tailgate. Toyota calls this design language the “Keen Look”. The model has slim headlights and LED daytime running lights combined with the two-slat grille design. The muscular bumper sits high from the ground and includes sculpted fog lights housings and the central opening.

The wagon-like profile with floating roofline comes in the combination with subtly flared fenders. The elongated taillights and pronounced rear bumper combined with the roof mounted spoiler improves the look of the upright rear end.


Inside the cabin, the Fortuner won’t follow the same path as the related Hilux. The model will feature high-quality materials and finish. The leather trimmed interior combined with nice accents in the high-spec versions will provide the premium look and feel. The design of the dash is elegant and more importantly, allow easy access to command and controls. Toyota will install latest infotainment system available with the 8-inch screen and will also offer navigation, DAB radio, etc.

The seats will comfortable and supportive and there will also be plenty of the legroom in the middle row. Buyers can also count on the power front seats and tailgate, improved sound insulation and more.

The standard safety features now include seven airbags, rearview camera electronic stability control, auto-on headlights, start assist control, trailer sway control. We expect that this model could gain the suite of Toyota’s advanced safety systems.

2018 Toyota Fortuner: Performance

Mechanically, the 2018 Toyota Fortuner won’t change from the current version. One of the most significant upgrades the last redesign brought is the all-new 2.8-liter diesel GD engine but Toyota also improved the chassis, suspension and transmission. The available 4.0-liter petrol unit also upgraded with the Dual VVT-I and model also switched from the full-time to the part-time four-wheel drive system.

The buyers in markets which will offer the 2.8-liter diesel engine will get the power of 177 hp and torque of 450 Nm. This torque is available between 1, 200 to 2, 400 rpm when this engine comes in the conjunction with the six-speed automatic transmission. The torque falls to 420 Nm with the six-speed manual gearbox.

Depending on the market, the Fortuner will also get other engine options. The 2.7-liter four-cylinder Dual VVT-I petrol will produce around 166 hp and torque of 245 Nm. Some markets will also get the 2.4-liter diesel engine and some 4.0-liter petrol.

The model will offer both the front- and all-wheel drive.

The arrival of the 2018 Toyota Fortuner is expected late this year or early next. The price should not change much.
