2018 Subaru Forester: Review, Changes, Release, Price

Subaru is working on the fifth-generation Forester which should arrive as the 2019 model based on Subaru Global Platform and with the styling previewed by the 2015 Subaru Viziv Future Concept. However, before the Forester enters the new generation, the 2018 Subaru Forester will land to the showrooms this summer. After the 2017 model year refresh, the 2018 version will also have a few new features to offer.


Changes that 2018 Forster will offer include the reverse automatic braking and automatic headlights available on all models with the EyeSight suite. This package will be standard on Touring models but the active vectoring torque will be standard on the 2.0XT Touring. The new Forester also brings the Black Edition package which upgrades the Premium trim with the unique styling, interior and some features.

Subaru made some styling revisions for the 2017 model year with the refreshed grille and front end and new lighting units. The 2018 Subaru Forester, on the other hand, brings some cosmetic changes related to the new Black Edition Package. This trim upgrade builds on the 2.5i Premium trim with the styling where dominates the black color. The model equipped with package rides on the 18-inch black alloy wheels. The black color also surrounds fog lights and model has black side mirrors. The grille is also blacked-out and the wing motif is also black while the frame is from chrome. Subaru will offer this package in four body colors. Available will be Dark Gray Metallic, Crystal Black Silica, Silver Metallic and Crystal White Pearl.

Interior, Equipment:

The interior of the model continues in the same form with the high-level of comfort, versatility and well-arranged controls. However, the Black Edition package also complements the interior with the unique trim details.

The Black Edition interior comes with the black upholstery combined with the simulate leather bolsters. This version also features black gloss and metallic center dash. The contrasting silver stitching will be seen on the shift knob and leather-wrapped steering wheel. Another detail is the door handles finished in chrome. This package also includes All Weather Package, ambient lighting and cargo tray by default.


The Subaru Forester powered with the 2.5-liter engine will again be available in the base, Premium, Limited and Touring trim options. The turbocharged Forester comes in Limited and Touring options.

The base trim means a 6.2-inch Starlink infotainment version, rearview camera, a driver information display, four speakers, height-adjustable driver seats and 17-inch wheels.

The Premium trim adds upgraded infotainment system with 7-inch screen, voice commands, and Safety Plus Telematics. It also includes 10-way power driver’s seats, moonroof, etc. The All-Weather Package adds to this heated front seats and mirrors and the EyeSight Safety suite. It includes systems like the adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and intervention, blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning with emergency braking, reverse automatic braking, etc.

The Limited upgrades with the leather upholstery, automatic headlights, upgraded driver’s display, Harman Kardon sound system, navigation, etc. The Touring comes with the 18-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, dual-zone climate control, etc.

The trims available with the turbocharged engine also add upgraded brakes, sport-tuned suspension, shift paddles, driving modes, etc. while other features follow the same principle as on the models with the naturally aspirated engine.

The 2018 Subaru Forester returns with the same power hardware.

The base engine is a 2.5-liter flat-4. It can produce 170 hp and torque of 174 pound-feet. You can choose between the six-speed manual or continuously variable transmission. Subaru’s proven all-wheel drive is standard on all versions.

If you want more spirited performance, a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine should be your pick. This engine can provide 250 hp and torque of 258 lb-ft. It comes in the combination with the CVT.

The fuel economy should be unchanged from the current version. The fuel economy leader is the base engine combined with the CVT for 26 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. The combination with the manual gearbox should return 22/28 mpg city/highway. The turbocharged version should be at 23 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

Availability, Price

The new 2018 Subaru Forester arrives this summer. The price range will start at $23, 710 with included destination cost. The Premium trim will cost from $26, 610, the Limited from 30, 010, and the Touring $34, 005. The new Black Edition Package comes for $1, 150.
The turbocharged Premium and Touring cost from $30, 410 and $37, 005 respectively.
