Subaru is working on the new generation version of its smallest crossover, the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek XV. This model sits bellow the larger and more expensive models, the Outback and Forester. It is actually a more rugged version of the popular Impreza with higher ground clearance and beefed suspension elements. When you add to that Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system you will get the agile and efficient vehicle which has strong off-road and all-weather capability.
New for 2018:
The second-generation of the Subaru Crosstrek will have its debut at the next Geneva Auto Show. The new model will come on Subaru’s new platform and should be slightly larger than the outgoing version. It will also get updated engine and other equipment and features. The dark teaser image that Subaru releases before model’s debut also gives us an idea how this model will look. So, let’s see what we know about this model in more details.
2018 Subaru Crosstrek XV: Platform, Design
The new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek XV, like the latest Impreza on which this model is based, will sit on Subaru’s new Global platform. This platform will also underpin Subaru’s future models like the all-new 2019 Forester. This modern, modular architecture features improved rigidity and lightweight structure but also provide higher powertrain flexibility. It also brings better electrification and safety capability. This also means that in the later stage, Subaru should offer a plug-in setup.
When it comes to the styling of the new-gen Crosstrek, there should not be any surprises. The dark teaser image doesn’t reveal much but it is enough to know that new model will follow the same strategy as the current one. That means that we will again get the more rugged version of Impreza’s exterior design which features the taller ride height and specific bumpers. The Crosstrek will also add black body cladding in lower body area and will also include standard roof rack.
About model’s interior we don’t know much. However, it should be more spacious because of slight size increase and we also expect improvements in materials quality.
On the other hand, the model should also get similar features and options as the latest Impreza. That means Subaru’s latest StarLink infotainment system with the standard 6.5-inch touchscreen interface, Apple Car Play and Android Auto support, Bluetooth, tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, 60/40 split fold rear seats, and so on.
Further, the new Crosstrek will get the latest versions of EyeSight safety technologies. There, it will include systems like adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, reverse automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, etc.
2018 Subaru Crosstrek XV: Powertrain
In the mechanical aspect, the new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek XV will also be very similar to the Impreza model. It should initially be offered with the 2.0-liter inline-4 engine which can produce 152 hp and torque of 145 lb-ft. It is slight power improvement over the current 148 hp.
This engine will work in pair with the continuously variable transmission while a six-speed manual gearbox could also be available in some trims. The power will, of course, be routed to Subaru’s tested and proven symmetrical four-wheel drive.
As for the fuel economy, the new Impreza model equipped with this engine returns 28 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. With that in mind, we should expect the better fuel economy than on the current Crosstrek which earns 26/33 mpg city/highway.
2018 Subaru Crosstrek XV: Arrival, Price
The new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek XV will make its official introduction at the next Geneva Auto Show in Mach. It will go on sale later this year. The price is still a mystery but we expect a small jump from the current level. It might cost just under $23, 000 for its base version.
