Mercedes is working on the new generation replacement of its mid-size luxury SUV, the GLE Class. The all-new GLE will arrive sometime in 2018 may be as the 2018 Mercedes GLE or even 2019 model. In any case, the new GLE model will replace the current version which is actually the updated M-Class model based on the version which debuted in 2012 but with brand’s new naming convention.
However, this time, the GLE will be new from the ground up. It will sit on the new chassis and with the body styling which follows brand’s latest design principles. The model will also get new engines including downsized engine version for the AMG model. The interior will also be redesigned and the model will also get the new tech.
2018 Mercedes GLE: Platform, Design
The new-generation 2018 Mercedes GLE will switch from the current platform to brand’s MHA architecture which is set to underpin models which are sized above the GLC class. This platform shares a similar design with the MRA version of brand’s architecture which debuted on the GLC model but is also the base of most of the brand’s sedans and coupes.
Styling wise, the new GLE will boast more rugged look, plus it could ride on the longer wheelbase and be wider as well.
The camouflaged prototype caught while testing in the city suggests redesigned nose with redesigned grille and new more angular headlights. The hood also seems to have more prominent design as well as the wheels arches which make the model to look more rugged and wider.
The rear will also get redesigned taillights while the rear glass appears to be more raked than on the current version.
Inside the cabin, the new GLE should feature the similar layout as in the E-Class. The center stack will house a tablet-like center display with the Command infotainment interface. In front of the driver will be redesigned instrument cluster with the possibility for the digitalized option.
The model will, of course, deliver plenty of luxuries and modern tech features including the latest driver aid systems.
2018 Mercedes GLE: Powertrains
The next-generation 2018 Mercedes GLE will again be available in several powertrain options. The conventional versions will be powered by the new generation of inline-four and -six engines which promise better efficiency and performance. The diesel version won’t appear in in the US but will be available on the Old Continent. But, we expect to see the plug-in hybrid version again.
On the other hand, the high-performance AMG GLE63 will ditch the current 5.5-liter V-8 engine in favor of the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. This engine will bring improved efficiency and power will be around 500 hp while the S version should reach to 600 hp.
2018 Mercedes GLE: Arrival, Price
It’s not clear yet when Mercedes would launch this model in 2018. It is possible to come as the 2018 Mercedes GLE or even as the 2019 model. The price is also the mystery, but we don’t expect a radical increase over the current version.
