2018 GMC Terrain Diesel: Review, Price

GMC’s smallest crossover SUV, the mid-size Terrain is all new for the 2018 model year. And all-new means new from outside, inside, under the skin and under the hood. While redesigning the Terrain the same principles were followed like for the closely related Chevy Equinox. The new Terrain is both smaller and lighter but also based on the new platform. The styling is a modern evolution of brand’s previous generation design philosophy while the interior is more refined and functional.

The revolution also happened under the hood as the new Terrain ditched the V-6 engine and now offers three turbocharged units. But, what fuel conscious buyer will like the most is the turbocharged diesel engine. And yes, the 2018 GMC Terrain Diesel shares its engine with the Equinox but it also powers the Chevy Cruze.

The new generation Terrain has smaller footprint and also rides on the smaller wheelbase. The new length is 183.1 inches, about 3 inches less than on the previous generation but the wheelbase is also smaller with 107.3 inches compared to previous generation 112.5 inches. The model also migrated to GM’s new D2XX platform and with smaller proportions and engines, it also contributes to the weight loss of over 400 pounds.

The new Terrain is also more aggressively styled. Sharper and stronger lines, larger grille and more sculpted rear end forming less boxy and more appealing body. The grille is again available in different patterns and new headlight design gives more character to model’s face. The hood has more pronounced lines and the rear end is also more interesting thanks to more aggressive taillights and body sculpting.

Interior, Features:

Surprisingly, the significant reduction of the wheelbase and overall length won’t impact the interior comfort radically. Actually, the rear legroom will lose just 0.2 inches from the previous generation 39.9 inches. The cargo space will measure 29.6 cu ft with rear seats up and 63.3 cu ft when you don’t use them.

On the other hand, the interior will benefit from softer materials, improved noise cancellation, nice trim details and new technologies.

The infotainment system is easy to use and supports Apple Car Play and Android Auto features. The center screen will measure either 7-or 8-inches.

The model will, however, be available in SL, SLE, SLT and Denali trims. But, the 2018 GMC Terrain Diesel will come in SLE and SLT trims. The base trim comes only with the 1.5-turbocharged gasoline engine and Denali uses the 2.0-liter turbo-4 only. The diesel engine is optional on two middle trims.

The SLE trim has standard features like the 17-inch wheels, keyless entry and ignition, a 7-inch touchscreen, auto-dimming rear mirror, etc. Additional packages add to that power driver seat, heated front seats, 8-inch display, information display, navigation and blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and parking sensors.

The SLT upgrades with the leather upholstery and available safety systems like the lane departure warning and intervention, automatic high beams, low-speed forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking.

2018 GMC Terrain Diesel: Powertrain

Powering the 2018 GMC Terrain Diesel will be the oil-burner shared with the Chevy Equinox and Cruze. The 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel can produce 137 hp and torque of 240 lb-ft. Unlike the 1.5- and 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline units, the turbo diesel won’t be bolted to the 9-speed automatic transmission. Instead, this engine will route the power through the 6-speed automatic gearbox. Both, the front- and all-wheel drive will be available.

The model will keep the same suspension setup but switches to the power assist steering system.

Unfortunately, GMC hasn’t said the fuel economy ratings but considering how this engine performs in the Equinox we should expect about 40 mpg on the highway.

The 2018 GMC Terrain Diesel starts the sales this summer. The FWD SLE will cost from $31, 590. THE FWD SLT will jump to $34, 195. The AWD SLE and SLT will come for $33, 340 and 35, 915 respectively.
